FarFetched

About Far Fetched

Far Fetched is a free geography game. You're dropped onto a real road somewhere in the world, you look around, and you name the country. It's quick to learn, it works in any browser, and you can play on your own, with friends or against everyone online.

Who makes it

Far Fetched is made and run by Adam Rothwell, based in New South Wales, Australia. We build the game, write the articles and country guides, answer support emails and look after moderation ourselves. You can reach us at [email protected].

Why we made it

Most of us learn the shape of the world from maps: outlines, capitals and borders. But you can learn a lot about a place just by standing in it. The alphabet on a shop sign, the side of the road the traffic keeps to, the colour of the soil and the shape of the roofs all tell you something. Far Fetched turns that into a game.

We wanted it to be quick and friendly. You name a country rather than pinpointing a spot on a map, so a round takes seconds and a game can fit into a coffee break. Close guesses still score, so newcomers feel progress straight away, and the daily challenge gives everyone the same five places to talk about.

Where the places come from

Every place comes from Google Street View and is outdoors. In countries that Google has photographed itself, we only use Google's own imagery. Where it hasn't, places come from outdoor 360° photos that people have shared on Google Maps. Places are picked automatically around towns and cities (for Urban games) and across countryside, mountains and national parks (for Natural games), in 214 countries and territories.

In a multiplayer match everyone sees exactly the same places in the same order, so it's a fair race. If a place won't load, the game tries again, and if it still can't be shown it's skipped without costing anyone points and flagged so it can be taken out of the game. Players can report a place that's broken or misleading with the flag button, and reported places are checked and removed.

Keeping it friendly

Lots of families and classes play Far Fetched, so we work to keep it a friendly place:

How it's paid for

Far Fetched is free to play. It's paid for by ads on our articles and guides, by an optional full-screen ad between some games, by Far Fetched Pro (an optional USD $3.99 a month membership with no ads, Ranked matches and monthly Miles) and by optional Miles packs for profile looks. There are no ads on the game's menus or while you play, and nothing you can buy makes you better at the game.

Street View imagery

Far Fetched uses Google Maps Platform to show Street View imagery, which remains © Google. Far Fetched is an independent game and is not made, endorsed or sponsored by Google.
